Gardening: Producing food!

In 2010 we have had a bumper crop of very small potatoes!  Harvested as soon as the plants began to die back, in early August, I can’t help wondering if, by some miracle, they might have grown bigger had we left them in place!

On the plus side, they are delicious, and have kept very well.  The keeping part’s not only down to luck though, as I went through them twice in the 1st week, taking out any rotten or damaged ones.  They are stored in double-thickness paper sacks (that the horse feed came in), in our Sellerie (saddlery), which is well-aerated, shaded and cool.  The sacks are standing in plastic boxes.

We also grew 4 of 5 varieties of tomatoes, which are a great success, and courgettes.  French beans were less good.  We used old straw from mucked-out stables as mulch for the tomatoes and the courgettes.  This had the double effect of not only keeping in moisture, but also delivering natural fertiliser.  Both are still going strong, delivering more than enough tomatoes (I haven’t used tinned for months and we always have greek or tricolore salad on the go!)

I will look for other info like the varieties of veggies we used, as this blog will form a useful record for when we begin again in the spring.

Yesterday I harvested some peaches, which, Pierre said, would never ripen on the tree, as the trees are poorly situated for sun, having been planted by the previous owner, along with plum, apple and pear trees, to mask an ugly pig-shed next door.  I have only “done” 1 of the 2 trees…

Starting to gather what peaches I can reach!
